Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Spine Discs?
If you've ever dealt with disc-related back pain or neck pain, you know how important healthy spinal discs are to feeling comfortable through your day. Now, promising new research is investigating a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to reduce the pace of disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers determined that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory process and enhancing a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In everyday terms, this helps disc cells remove damaged parts and function better, which may help postpone the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a major role in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin demonstrates potential as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
While additional research is required before quercetin becomes a standard part of disc care, these findings add to a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a helpful role alongside non-invasive, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers, we believe in a holistic approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's innate healing.
