EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS TESTED
The aim of this described study is to analyze whether adding an exercise program to an educational program can enhance walking capacity in those who are diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. This is a randomized controlled clinical trial with 60 participants who will be randomly put in either the intervention or control group. The intervention group will get an educational program and an exercise program, while the control group will only receive the educational program. The primary outcome measure is walking capacity, while the secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of life. (1) Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers knows our Baton Rouge spinal stenosis patients are very interested in these outcomes!LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH NEUROGENIC CLAUDICATION
Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a spinal issue that causes narrowing of the spinal canal in the low back area, resulting in pressure on the nerves. This can result in pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In severe cases, it can also cause difficulty walking. The condition is most common in people over the age of 50. These are just the folks in Baton Rouge who need to keep (or at least begin) exercising!
THE EXERCISES
The specific exercises that will be used in this study are made to enhance walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles around the spine. The hope is that by performing these exercises regularly, patients will experience less pain and disability and have an improved quality of life.
THE CONTROL GROUP
The control group in this trial will only receive an educational program about their condition and how to manage it. While education is valuable, it is not typically enough on its own to provide significant relief from symptoms. That is why the addition of an exercise program is so valuable. It involves the back pain sufferer in his or her relief! Listen to this PODCAST with Dr. Michael McMurray on The Back Doctors Podcast with Dr. Michael Johnson as he details The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management for lumbar spinal stenosis.
