Baton Rouge Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think
VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!
When your chiropractor talks about vitamin D, it's not just chatter — it's because this one nutrient gently impacts so much of what keeps you moving well and feeling good. This sunshine vitamin is quietly doing critical work in our bodies — and two newly published research papers remind us just how much it matters, especially as we get older. At Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Baton Rouge — read on to see what the latest science says about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!
WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US
A major systematic review and meta-analysis published in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 analyzed 69 clinical trials concerning nearly 154,000 participants to evaluate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for fracture and fall prevention. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was linked to a somewhat decreased risk for fractures — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent have to recuperate from a fall. No single supplement tells the whole story of good health, but when research at this scale points in a consistent direction, it's worth paying attention. (1)
The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, zoomed out to look at the bigger picture — investigating what vitamin D means for our health across the full range of getting older. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is associated with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a decreased risk of falling. That's a big deal! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most valuable protection we have. (2)
MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US
What's noticeable is that the research found roughly 6 in 10 older adults are vitamin D-deficient — and the consequences reach well beyond bones, touching muscle health, heart function, brain health, and even how long we live. Simply put, vitamin D is one of those nutrients our whole body needs to function optimally. (2)
YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED
Here at Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you in the door. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to relieve back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works beautifully alongside good nutrition. When your vitamin D levels are where they should be, the muscles and bones supporting your spine are better equipped to respond to chiropractic care — and that means the work we do together in the office may be more long-lasting.

So are you ready? Talk with your chiropractor at Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers about checking your vitamin D levels — a simple blood test can tell the story. Many of us, especially those of us spending more time indoors, are deficient without knowing it. Whether it's a supplement, a little more time in the sun, or vitamin D-rich foods like salmon and fortified dairy, little things add up.
Good health is a team effort — and at Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers, so is your care.
