BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet plays a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A recent paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein sufficient enough to maintain normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other papers, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another new paper states that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just released this past month showed that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet closely had reduced chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, lower risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers finds these new studies quite interesting to share with our Baton Rouge chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It proposes avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
