An age-old chiropractic
patient question: ”Just tell me what exercise to do to get rid of this back
pain, and I’ll do it!”
We all want the one “correct” answer to make
things better. We like to “just do it” and be finished. Knowing
just what the right thing is is the conundrum even for
researchers and for your Baton Rouge chiropractor. The key
for all involved – researcher, doctor, patient – is getting to know the patient. Spine & Sports Rehab Center gets to know
each of our back pain patients to know better which exercise(s) may
be most beneficial. Our chiropractic services are here to help.
WHAT TO DO?
Researchers struggle to know what
the right back pain easing exercise(s) is, too. A group of them reviewed 118 back pain exercise
trials with 9710 volunteers. They discovered that the most
effective exercise modes for getting rid of
pain were mind-body, core-based exercise, and Pilates. They found
that the most effective means to decrease disability were Pilates,
core-based, and strength exercises. According to a special scoring
system know as SUCRA which measures the
rates the probability of an approach’s being effective revealed
that Pilates ranked highest with 93% for likeliness of reducing
pain and 98% for reducing disability. (1) Spine & Sports Rehab Center will
agree that those are extraordinary effectiveness outcomes!
BUT WHAT ABOUT…?
Other studies focuse on the
effectiveness of other exercises, too. An analysis of 89 studies/5578 patients dedicated
to establishing the effectiveness of exercise for
non-specific chronic low back pain reported that Pilates had
the highest probability of decreasing pain, resistance
training and stabilization/motor control exercise for enhancing
physical function, and resistance and aerobic training for enhancing mental health. (2) Pilates won again! Then, in a
414 chronic low back pain patient study, core stability exercise decreased
pain more and improved function better than general exercise. (3)
And for back pain sufferers with a lumbar disc herniation, stretch and
strength-based yoga proved itself to be a likely
option to enhance associated neuropathic pain,
disability, and function in these patients by increasing
mobilization, core muscle strength, and hamstring flexibility. (4) Spine & Sports Rehab Center
does not want to perplex you or lead you astray! We will just urge you to try
a few of our recommendations and see how good they make you feel.
