Falls can happen at any age. Falls can cause
great harm or not much harm at all. Falling once certainly
can raise the intensity of fear of falling again. All
these bits of information indicate
that falls are am issue, an issue that is age blind.
Spine & Sports Rehab Center always inquires our Baton Rouge
chiropractic patients if they’ve fallen recently.
Spine & Sports Rehab Center supports interventions like exercise
that may reduce the fear of falls, the impact of falls and the
incidence of falls. Plus, Spine & Sports Rehab Center is quite good at
relieving Baton Rouge back pain or neck pain that results.
OLDER FOLKS AND FALLS
Older folks reside at home alone
and with others or in community-based housing. Each situation
has a risk of falling. Rugs, pets, misreading steps, or any
number of things can cause a fall. For these older friends
and neighbors and relatives, the fear of falling is usual. Researchers have
put effort into research studies looking
at exercise interventions that reduce the fear of falling as
well as the risk of falling. Such trials with community-dwelling older persons
incorporated planned, structured, repetitive
physical activity geared toward improving
strength, gait, balance and mood as well as decreasing falls. Some
interventions tested are three dimensional
like Tai Chi, Yoga, resistance training, and balance work. One meta-analysis
of exercise trials reported on non-statistically
significant benefits but benefits nonetheless: an 11% reduction
in people who fell, a 13% drop in falls, a 19% decrease
in injuries from falls. (1) Another study of aged 60-88 year olds that implemented a judo inspired
exercise program which taught the participants how to fall and how
to prevent falls revealed significant improvements in physical
performance, fall-related self-efficacy and fall methods. (2) They
found that such practices worked, particularly right
after the intervention. (3) Spine & Sports Rehab Center would encourage
our older Baton Rouge patients to keep exercising to prolong these
fall-prevention and fall-fear-reducing benefits!
YOUNGER FOLKS AND FALLS
Younger people can appreciate
Baton Rouge fall prevention strategies as falls may be just
as detrimental to them. Falls and fall-related
injuries jeopardize people at all ages.
Falls at work and at home are a problem. A workplace trial that
lasted 10 weeks for working age adults with a judo-inspired exercise
program was designed to improve
physical function, activity, fall-related self-efficacy and safe-landing techniques
for a fall. Participants recovered physically and
psychologically. They gained techniques in how
to fall safely as well as how to avert falls. (4) Spine & Sports Rehab Center
supports exercise for all Baton Rouge chiropractic family members, young
and old, to keep strong and healthy in the face of challenges like falls. Spine & Sports Rehab Center
helps relieve fall-related back pain and neck pain, too.
