Exercise to Strengthen Muscle in Women Helps with Baton Rouge Back Pain Relief

March 23, 2021

Low back pain in older women demands some attention. Researchers and chiropractic back pain specialists like your Baton Rouge chiropractor at Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers provide that attention! Women with back pain are a special group of our chiropractic practice with whom we are happy to work!

OLDER WOMEN AND Baton Rouge BACK PAIN

A recent study reported that low back pain among older women stems from abdominal truck muscle weakness. The women included in this study also experienced reduced mobility function. Even their knee extensor muscle strength was weak. What links these concerns together? Muscle. Researchers described that muscle weakness directly linked low back pain, malnutrition, and decreased mobility function in older women. The good news was highlighted that exercise enhanced these factors. (1) Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers  sees over and over the benefit of exercise for our Baton Rouge back pain patients.

EXERCISE AND BACK PAIN RELIEF

Baton Rouge chiropractic patients with back pain seek pain relief. That’s the goal of care. Our patients frequently try other healthcare options like oral NSAIDs (number needed to treat (NNT) is 7 meaning 7 patients need to be treated for 1 patient to report benefit) and SNRIs like duloxetine (NNT: 10) and exercise (NNT: 7). A recent study reported that these options often deliver clinically meaningful pain reduction as shown by the above number-needed-to-treat statistics. Which works over time though? Exercise. The researchers explained that the one intervention that demonstrated sustained benefit after the study’s intervention time period came to an end was exercise. (2) We present this to foster the practice of exercise for all our Baton Rouge back pain (and neck pain) patients. Since this is an article focused about women with low back pain, Medical Spine and Sports Injury and Rehab Centers urges our older female patients to exercise. It’s central to the chiropractic treatment plan that involves simple exercises as the beginning point!
