Baton Rouge Chiropractic Care May Better for Vertebral Fractures than Vertebroplasty

Spine & Sports Rehab Center recommends curcumin for pain reduction and Baton Rouge conservative care for vertebral fractures instead of vertebroplasty.

NO VERTEBROPLASTY FOR VERTEBRAL FRACTURE

Baton Rouge Chiropractic Option for Conservative Care

Painful osteoporotic vertebral fractures occur in the vertebral bones of the spine. Often started by a fall or injury, a Baton Rouge vertebral fracture (compression fracture) occurs when a vertebra – a bone of the spine - will dissolve on itself, resulting in the bone to reduce in size.  Researchers and doctors found a method to “fix” these vertebral fractures by inserting a cement type compound into the collapsed bone to return it to its usual size again. This procedure is known as vertebroplasty. It made sense. However, a recent Cochrane Review study of results over many years reveal that high- to moderate-quality evidence reports no important benefit of vertebroplasty for acute or subacute osteoporotic vertebral fractures and warns of its capability to harm. Adverse side-effects from vertebroplasty include osteomyelitis, cord compression, thecal sac injury and respiratory failure. (1) How does chiropractic care conservatively manage a vertebral compression fracture? Consult your Baton Rouge chiropractor. The appropriate time after injury to include gentle Cox® Technic to the treatment plan for a vertebral fracture (generally around 6 weeks with careful tolerance testing) will be determined. In the meantime, there are conservative options like bracing, good posture (with even a little extension), pain medications, etc., to relieve the pain. Your Baton Rouge chiropractor at Spine & Sports Rehab Center is ready to help!

Pain-relieving curcumin may be a good addition to the Baton Rouge chiropractic treatment plan.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Try Curcumin!

Curcumin is a plant-derived natural compound from the rhizome of the turmeric (curcuma longa) plant. It’s useful for treating and preventing any number of diseases, particularly age-associated ones like cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation and infection. (2) What an amazing polyphenol! It’s even shown to be superior to corticosteroids for dropping inflammation and to be beneficial alone and/or in combination with antibiotics for being antibacterial. (3,4) With so many amazing benefits, curcumin may be a logical addition to your nutrition routine. Let us talk about it at your next Baton Rouge chiropractic visit at Spine & Sports Rehab Center!
