PHYSICIAN REFERRALS AND BENEFITS
Physician referrals to complementary health approaches (CHAs)
is interesting. An inquiry found
that 53.1% of all US physicians referred patients to at least one CHA in the past year. The most
common approaches advocated were acupuncture,
yoga, herbs/nonvitamin supplements, osteopathic/chiropractic manipulation, and
massage.
Female doctors were more inclined than their male counterparts
to suggest for massage,
supplements, acupuncture and mind-body therapies. Psychiatrists, OB/GYNs, and
pediatricians were less likely to suggest
chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation than general and family practitioners who
most often recommended manipulation (54%) and massage (52.6%).
(1) And it’s been documented that first contact
care by a chiropractor for issues like back pain, shoulder and hip pain results in lower cost of care as well as clinically similar
pain relief and greater satisfaction levels. (2) We love to see this referral among healthcare providers and physicians of all types! Baton Rouge chiropractic patients may well benefit from such collaboration in costs savings,
pain relief, and assurance in the care they receive.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Embrace the Holiday Season!
Just for fun, check out these Danish articles
about the benefits of holiday joy and Santa fun! One study of medical doctors whose
November conferences (with coffee) were compared to December conferences
(without coffee but with Santa). The Santa visits enhanced the joy
to the level of meetings with coffee. (The authors highlight
that the trial was “kept secret for the participant in accordance
with the tradition of Santa’s elves.”) (3) Another Danish study considered issues like belief in Santa and relationship length that may influence
doctors’ divorce statistics in
the months following the holidays. Divorce rates rose least for general
practitioners whose relationships were also found to be longer
that other medical subspecialties. Belief
in Santa was helpful only for psychiatrists!
These authors’ final recommendation was to enjoy
the Christmas fun but don’t rely on Santa for the present
shopping. Each person must do that for himself/herself! (4)
If you see Santa in your Baton Rouge chiropractor’s office, it is
a good thing for all!
